Embark on a journey into the linguistic identities of Vietnamese refugees’ descendants in Iceland at IAIE 2024’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) conference in Chemnitz, Germany. Delve into the paper titled ‘Vietnamese Refugees’ Descendants in Iceland: Their Development of Linguistic Identities through Family Language Policies,’ which explores how these identities have evolved since 1979. Supported by compelling video documentation, this presentation unveils the drastic drop in linguistic proficiency between generations due to the absence of Vietnamese within families. However, it also highlights a growing desire among some descendants to reconnect with their roots, evidenced by efforts to learn and transmit the Vietnamese language and culture to future generations.
